Updated: May 2, 2022

Cedric Huntley was on hand to congratulate Col. Darnell S. Weaver as the 15th state police superintendent on Friday, April 27, 2022 at the Rhode Island State House.

He is the first person of color to hold this position which also encompasses the role of Director of the Department of Public Safety. The Director is appointed by and reports to Governor Dan McKee, who has complete confidence in Weaver, citing his integrity and work ethic, and his "particular skill set for building strong connections between police and communities they serve."

Prior to this appointment, Weaver had been in the lieutenant colonel post last year, which made him the highest-ranking officer of color ever in the Rhode Island State Police. Hailing from Cranston, Weaver has been posted in all state police barracks, and has held several leadership positions throughout his 28 years as a trooper; he was a U.S. Marine prior to joining the State Police.
