POSITION: Choose Peace AmeriCorps Member

The Institute for the Study and Practice of Nonviolence works to foster a community that addresses
potentially violent situations with nonviolent solutions. By teaching and exercising the principles and
practices of Nonviolence, ISPN has helped to reduce violence in cities throughout Rhode Island,
while assisting in increasing the amount of services offered to victims of violence throughout the
state.
Position Overview:
The AmeriCorps Nonviolence Team Members commit to 10 months of service, providing nonviolence
training to 1000 economically disadvantaged students in Providence, Pawtucket and Central Falls,
Rhode Island. Members will be trained in the Kingian Nonviolence philosophy and curriculum, and
act as role models for how to live a nonviolent lifestyle within their assigned schools. Each AmeriCorps
Member will be assigned to a team and placed at one of ISPN’s partner schools. Specifically,
Members will conduct nonviolence trainings, develop nonviolence programming, and participate in
community events and meetings at their assigned school. Members are expected to establish
relationships with school staff, parents, and key stakeholders in an effort to provide a more thorough
support system for students. AmeriCorps Teams are responsible for organizing and performing one
service project outside the general scope of their work as a means of symbolizing their cohort’s
collective mission.

 $13,732 living stipend
 $5,815 Segal education award (upon completion of 1700 hours of service)

Requirements:
 Commit to 10 months of service: August 27th 2018 – June 28th 2019
 Complete a minimum of 1700 hours of service
 At least 18 years old
 Adhere to a drug-free workplace policy
 U.S. Citizen, U.S. National or Permanent Resident and able to provide documentation
 Possess a high school diploma/ GED, or able to provide proof of plans to obtain
 Undergo criminal history background check
 Able and available to work a full-time, 40 hour a week, flexible schedule including some nights
and weekends
 Experience with youth and/or youth development
 Strong desire to work with high-risk, gang affiliated youth
 Strong leadership qualities, self-motivated, and independent working abilities
 Strong interpersonal and communication skills
 Experience with computers and basic programs
 Able to work independently and within a team
 Access to reliable transportation
 Attend weekly professional development trainings and reflections at the Institute
 Able to function in a professional setting
Preferred:
 Experience in a classroom setting and/or group facilitation
 College degree or some college experience
 Experience in conflict resolution, problem solving, and community organizing
 Bilingual/Multilingual individuals strongly encouraged to apply
